Summary ~ Evermore by Alyson Noel :

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch.   Going out of her way to shield herself from human contact to suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste…

Ever sees Damen and feels an instant recognition.  He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets.  Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking—and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head.  She doesn’t know who he really is—or what he is.  Damen equal parts light and darkness, and he belongs to an enchanted new world where no one ever dies.

 Evermore

At first I thought Evermore was going to be like Twilight.  What is the big secret that the gorgeous, mysterious and exotic guy named Damon (to me it seemed close to Demon) has and why does he always have such strange attendance issues in high school?  What is it that attracts Ever, the heroine of Evermore, to this guy?  But then as soon as I started to read Evermore, I knew this wasn’t Twilight.  Ever is psychic for one thing and though she hails from Oregon (Pacific Northwest similarities) she is now living the O.C. dream in southern California.  Only trouble is that Ever’s immediate family is dead (she says it’s her fault) and she can read minds, know the answers to tests by just touching the questions (I wish I had had that skill growing up) and she’s absolutely beautiful but hides it under hoods everyday and chooses to be a member of the loser table at lunch with her two best friends, Miles and Haven.

Evermore is an enjoyable, sometimes dark story about a girl with extraordinary psychic powers whose world is turned upside down a second time when she meets Damen and his creepy friend, Drina.  Noel kept me guessing pretty far into the book and I was thrilled by her unexpected twists and turns.  The teen angst and love is prevalent throughout Evermore but not as strong as in Twilight.  Friendship is an important part of the characters’ lives too.  For you moms out there who might let your teen read Evermore, there is a portion of the book that focuses on teen drinking, its dulling effects and how good it feels.

All in all, Evermore was a great way to lighten my reading load this winter and provided me with a creative, magical story that I really enjoyed.  This is the first in a series for Noel and I think she may have a hit on her hands in YA Fiction with the Twilight series having concluded in 2008.  Evermore has good and evil, likable characters, vivid descriptions and a good story.
