Today’s Favorite Song

One of my all time favorite songs is “Son of a Preacher Man”.  Now if you are of my generation (Gen X) than you first discovered this song on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack and it was the Dusty Springfield recording.  This is the version that I know backwards and forwards and even sing it myself at karaoke.

Yesterday I heard Aretha Franklin’s version from her album titled “This Girl’s In Love With You”.  Her take on the song is FANTASTIC!!!  The second verse has been slowed down and Aretha grinds out the notes and lyrics and then picks it back up to a rolling end.  Other artists who have recorded “Son of a Preacher Man” are the amazing Joss Stone as well as the great Tina Turner.  I have a recording of Joan Osborne preforming “Son of a Preacher Man” live in NYC back in 1996.

“According to Wikipedia” the song was originally pitched to Aretha Franklin to record but she turned it down but later recorded it in 1970.  The Wikipedia entry says that 79 different recordings have been made of “Son of a Preacher Man” including such artists as Bette Midler, Janis Joplin, Nancy Sinatra, Jessica Simpson, Tanya Tucker, Melissa Etheridge, Chet Atkins, Natalie Merchant & Liza Minnelli.

Below you will find versions of “Son of a Preacher Man”done by Dusty Springfield, Joss Stone, Aretha Franklin & Tina Turner (in that order).  Enjoy!
