Booking Through Thursday ~ May 22nd

“Books and films both tell stories, but what we want from a book can be different from what we want from a movie. Is this true for you? If so, what’s the difference between a book and a movie?”

To me the difference is the investment I’m willing to make.  I spend only a few hours with a movie and it’s easy to revisit it at any time once I own the DVD.  A book is something that stays with me physically for days if not weeks at a time.  I take it with me and it keeps me company while I’m alone waiting in line or waiting for friends for lunch.  A movie tells me what I need to know in such a short time.  It can be like a roller coaster ride for the mind where a book is like an intimate relationship.  It’s just me, the characters and the story.

I am going to read things that bring me joy, make me think and tend to make a different kind of impression on my mind than that made by a movie.  I love movies and I have a huge list of favorites that are like old friends but books offer a bit more meat for me to dig into.  I have control over how quickly I take in the information when reading and books are easier to pause/put down and pick up at another time.  Remember Joey from “Friends” when he put “The Shining” and “Little Women” in the freezer?  I love that!!

Today’s Favorite Song

As you probably know, American Idol has a new reigning king… David Cook!  I was surprised but extremely pleased with the results.  I thought Archuleta was going to sweep it but it went the other way in the end.  Among the guest performers on last night’s show was one of my all time favorite singers, George Micheal.  I have been a die hard GM fan since his Wham! days and am very upset by the fact that he is going on tour in the States this summer and I won’t be there to see him.  I was so excited to see George and to hear that his voice is still amazing.  I decided to share one of my favorite songs sung by him with you.  “I Can’t Make You Love Me” was originally recorded by Bonnie Raitt for her “Luck of the Draw” album in 1991.  In 1997 George Micheal recorded his own version (very similar to the Bonnie Raitt version but even sadder) as a B-side for a single.  His talent is showcased beautifully on this recording and I have found a live performance of George performing this song on YouTube to share with you here.

What Are YOU Reading?

I’m reading “Nineteen Minutes”by Jodi Picoult right now.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I really loved her latest novel, “Change Of Heart”, but wasn’t sure what to expect with this one.  I had doubts going into this book as well as high hopes.  I lived in Denver, CO from August 1998 to July 1999.  The morning of April 20th, 1999 I was at work and looking forward to dinner with my boyfriend at the time and his roommate and his girlfriend Kristen, when the news broke that a shooting had occurred at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.  The whole country stopped in it’s tracks and the Denver area fell to it’s knees in despair.  Two teenagers had gone on a shooting spree and then killed themselves in their high school.  Kristen and I attended the memorial at the high school a couple of days later.  Kristen and I couldn’t tear ourselves away from the news that whole week.  I actually kept the Vans sneakers I wore that day that became covered in mud for years an years without washing the mud away.

I understand that Picoult did a massive amount of research for this book including interviews with people affected by the Columbine Massacre.  So far I don’t like the flow of “Nineteen Minutes” as well as “Change of Heart” but I am happy that though I am reading the same author’s work I feel like it’s a very different book.  I have stopped reading James Petterson for the sole reason that all of his books read the same and just flow together into one long story after awhile.  I do feel like I need to be taking notes as I read “Nineteen Minutes” because there are so many characters and with the flashbacks and I find myself having to look back to what I already read for clues.  I’m about a quarter of the way done so far so I’ll let you know how it’s going as I continue.

What are you reading right now?  Are you happy with it or are you regretting picking it up?  Please leave a comment below if you care to.
